Jebel Park in Muscat

Dramatic stone mountains surround Muscat city. On one of those mountains, sitting between two traditional villages, is Jebel Park. It grew from the client’s brief to provide local residents with nearby recreational space.

The site is a narrow strip of steep rock slope that borders a service road. Our design addressed the steep topography by creating a series of high terraces. This approach also generated massing similar in form to the adjacent residential buildings.
The massing of the park terraces echoes the forms of the existing houses in the village.
One of the park’s major attractions is the play fountain. Its location next to the cafe allows parents to sit nearby while the children play at the fountain.
Walls and planting create shady and quiet places to sit.
An initial problem for the project was that cars were speeding along the service road at the base of the park. The solution was a new design that creates a shared space with pedestrian priority.
Another problem the project addressed was flooding, which occurs during infrequent but intense tropical storms that routinely damage city infrastructure. Here the solution was to direct stormwater runoff to sub-surface detention tanks. The design for this involves using a combination of French drains, permeable retaining walls and lawns as infiltration zones.
