We recently kicked-off our own research and development program for using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate/represent landscape architectural design. The first round of development and discussion revealed both opportunities and challenges. AI is a new kind of tool offering a very wide range of possibilities. Based on our initial work it is clear our new assistant needs training. Sound familiar?
Not surprisingly, landscape architects around the world are looking at this new arrival and investigating it’s usefulness for our work.
Here’s an article that discusses a little background context and broader issues around using AI within the landscape representation/design process.
The article raises questions about its impact on designers and ethical considerations. It explains the evolution of landscape representation and emphasizes the need for critical evaluation of AI-generated images. The author highlights concerns about authenticity, biases, and the disconnection between human creativity and the site. While AI may play a role, the author believes designers’ unique skills are irreplaceable. The article concludes that AI will coexist with other representation methods and encourages responsible use of AI while exploring new ideas.
It is a sound appraisal. We agree with much of what is said here.
